The base truck for the GEAR expedition vehicle is a refurbished 1983 Oshkosh HEMTT(Heavy Mobility Tactical Truck). It is the 977 Cargo Truck that is used worldwide by the US military to resupply missions through extreme terrain. The vehicle is 8 wheel drive with 4 wheel steering in the front. The engine is a biodiesel compatible Detroit diesel with a Allison automatic transmission. The motor produces 450 hp with the help of the supercharger and turbo. The HEMTT can ford over 4 ft of water and the tires are 52" tall.The vehicle is 8ft wide, 35 feet long, 35,000 lbs with a GVWR of 68,000 lbs.
Our particular truck was bought from the US military 8 years ago from a collector in Kentucky who refurbished it down to the last nut and bolt. GEAR purchased it with 10,000 original miles. The vehicle is now located in the Ozarks of Missouri at the headquarters of Global Expedition Vehicles. Mike and his wife Renee Van Pelt are the company owners and they along with the global X team will be doiing the conversion of the vehicle to our world capable green expedition vehicle.
